The 26-year-old, a former Giro d'Italia winner who struggled in Saturday's Pro Tour event of Clasica San Sebastian, made the decision together with Italy coach Franco Ballerini, the Italian Cycling Federation told its website.

Cunego said Saturday after racing the Clasica San Sebastian that he had the breathing difficulties and headaches that had accompanied him in training since the fall on the Tour.

The federation said Cunego will now concentrate on preparing for September's world championships in the northern Italian city of Varese.
