The Giallorossi have signed just three players in the close season – Liverpool's John Arne Riise and Siena duo Simone Loria and Artur Moraes.

Lack of big-name signings casts doubts over Roma's ability to compete for the Serie A title next season.

But Spalletti said Roma can't afford to spend big like their fellow competitors.

"The gap from certain clubs will always be there. Logically, every side must use the resources they are able to generate," he was quoted as saying by Calcio Italia.

"We too have spent money and have the opportunity to offer contracts that many other clubs cannot afford.

"There are clubs ahead of us, but let's not forget there are many behind us, too."
