Beijing 2008: Algeria's Haddad clinches first Arab medal

Algerian athlete Soraya Haddad won the bronze medal in the women's Judo competition for 52kg class to register the first medal for Arabs in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Haddad beat Sholpan Kaliyeva from Kazakhstan with a waza-ari to grab the bronze medal.

China's Xian Dongmei, who ousted Haddad, won gold after beating An Kum Ae of Korea DPR.

Top Eight finish for Al-Hadi

In the men's 66kg class, Egyptian athlete Amin Al-Hadi finished seventh in the overall standings after being knocked out by Uzbekistan's Mirali Sharipov.

Al-Hadi, who also finished seventh in the 2005 World Championship, beat Armen Nazaryan before losing to Cuba's Yordanis Arencibia in the second preliminary game.

However, the Egyptian recorded two victories over Andorra's Daniel Garcia Gonzalez and Taylor Takata of USA in the Repechage.

Japan's Masato Uchishiba won the gold medal.

In women's Badminton, Hadia Hosni was kncoked out from the last 32 round by Bulgaria's Petya Nedelcheva, who easily won 2-0.

In Fencing, Ahmed Nabil was also knocked out from the men's individual epee round of 64 after he lost to Estonia's Nicolai Novosjolov.
