Mesbah begins Olympic campaign

Hesham Mesbah won the bronze medal in the Judo competition to secure the first medal for Egypt in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Mesbah beat France's Yves-Matheiu Dafreville by Ippon in the men's 90kg bronze medal contest in less than one a half minute.

The 26-year-old Egyptian beat Korea's Sun-Ho Choi, Azerbaijan's Elkhan Mammadov and Andrei Kuzasenok from Belarus en route to his victory.

Mesbah came 17th in the Athens 2004 Games, before finishing fifth in the 2007 World Championship in Brazil.

Silver for Algeria

In the same weight, Algeria's Ammar Benikhlef won the silver medal as he lost the final to Georgia's Irakli Tsirekidze.

Benikhlef is the second Algerian to win a medal this summer, following Soraya Haddad's bronze medal achievement in the Women's Judo competition.
