Substitute Mido scored against his former club as Middlesbrough claimed a 2-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur in their Premiership opener on Saturday.

Central defender David Wheater deservedly put Boro in front in the 71st minute.

He bundled home the rebound after Tottenham's new Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes tipped Alfonso Alves' shot onto the bar.

Egyptian striker Mido was introduced instead of Brazilian frontman Alves with eight minutes remaining. He made an immediate impact.

Four minutes from time, Mido deflected home Didier Digard's shot from seven yards despite being under pressure.

Tottenham had a consolation late in the game when Boro's German defender Robert Huth headed into his own net from David Bentley's corner.

Mido is keen to impress this season after putting last season's injury woes behind him.

Instead of enjoying his summer vacation, Mido worked hard with a fitness expert in Cairo to regain his sharpness.
