Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is on the verge of signing an experienced star to boost his squad.

However, the Frenchman said that his target won't be eligible to play in the Champions League as he had already participated with his team in a European competition.

Press reports have suggested that Aston Villa's Gareth Barry and Alonso are the most imminent candidates to move to the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has urged Wenger to sign his counterpart.

"He is my friend and apart from that he is a great passer of the ball, he works hard defensively, he's experienced and he is only 26," Fabregas said.
