The Dutch frontman, who scored in Arsenal's emphatic 3-0 Premiership win over Newcastle, was substituted in the 63rd minute after hurting his ankle.

"He is having an X-ray and we have to check his ankle. Hopefully nothing is broken but I don't know yet," Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger told the club's official website.

Van Persie missed large parts of the last season due to injury but rediscovered his form with Holland at EURO 2008.

French manager Wenger was full of praise for the injury-prone forward.

"He can be that link between midfield and the strikers, and it is the way we want to play."

"I think you could see he was in shape and when he is like that he is very important player for us."
