Egypt have been dealt a major blow with the news that midfielder Mohamed Shawky will miss the crucial World Cup qualifier against DR Congo due to injury.
The Middlesbrough man pulled out of Egypt’s squad after sustaining a groin injury, assistant coach Shawki Gharib revealed.
“He’s definitely out of DR Congo match,” Gharib told reporters late on Wednesday.
Shawky will undergo scans on Thursday to find out the extent of the injury.
He will be keeping his fingers crossed that the injury won’t be serious as he began to establish himself as a first-team member at Boro.
Six-time African champions Egypt will face DR Congo on Sunday in Kinshasa.
Both teams are joint leaders in Group 12 with nine points, three ahead of Malawi.
