Middlesbrough midfielder Mohamed Shawky is back in contention for his side's Premiership match against Sunderland on Saturday.

The Egypt midfielder has recently recovered from a hamstring injury he sustained while on international duty for the Pharaohs.

He faces competition from Didier Digard and Julio Arca to feature against Sunderland as the latter duo have been also declared fit.

"Julio has played a half for the reserves in midweek so he's available, Shawky is also available," Boro coach Gareth Southgate was quoted as saying by the club's official website.

"It's been good to get people back into training and have a bigger squad to choose from."

However, Shawky might be rested as Southgate has his eyes set on the midweek Carling Cup clash against Manchester United.

"Marvin Emnes and Shawky both trained today and if need be I could put them both in the squad."

"Whether I do that with the two of them and Julio I don’t know but by Tuesday they will both be available to start."
