Egyptian evergreen striker Amr Zaki converted a penalty to help Wigan Athletic claim a precious 2-1 home victory over Manchester City in the Premiership on Sunday.

Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia put the hosts ahead after 16 minutes when he unleashed an unstoppable shot that left City keeper Joe Hart with no chance.

Belgian defender Vincent Kompany drew City level six minutes later, connecting with Elano’s low free-kick to bundle home with his knee.

Wigan were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute when Javier Garrido allegedly brought down Wilson Palacios inside the area.

Zaki stepped-up to send Hart the wrong way and restore the Latics’ advantage.

It was his fifth Premiership goal in six games as the 25-year-old, who joined Wigan from Zamalek on a season-long loan, tops the scorers’ chart.

The Egypt striker not only scored the winner, but also tormented City defense through his muscular interceptions and energetic runs all over the pitch.

He almost opened the scoring in the 14th minute when his curling left-footed shot flew just wide.

A brilliant individual effort towards the end saw him get the better of two defenders before firing a vicious shot that was tipped over the bar by Hart.

Wigan moved to tenth spot in the league table with eight points.
