Aguero netted a fourth minute strike before Raul Garcia’s scored Atletico’s second and the Argentine said the early goal was a big factor in securing the home win.

“We had a good start, I’m very glad to have scored the early goal which gave us tranquillity,” Aguero was quoted as saying by Marca.

“After the break we were a bit cautious. A third goal would have been great but the most important thing is that we won the game.”

The win over Marseille is Atletico’s second in two Champions League games after beating PSV Eindhoven 3-0 in the first round.

“In the Champions league all games are difficult. Marseille are not in their greatest form at the moment, but they’ve shown that they’re a tough team to face.”

Atletico are currently joint leaders of group D alongside Liverpool who beat PSV 3-1 at Anfield.
