William Gallas insisted he is the right man to skipper Arsenal despite being heavily criticized for not being able to accomplish his captaincy duties.

The French defender has worn the Gunners' armband since joining from London rivals Chelsea in the summer of 2006.

But many people questioned Gallas' credentials to have such a leading role following his infamous tantrum in a Premiership clash against Birmingham last season.

When Birmingham was awarded a last-gasp penalty, Gallas sat down sulking in protest by the halfway line.

Presumably, this attitude was the reason why the Frenchman was seen unfit for the skipper role.

Gallas said he was aware he made a mistake, but feels the criticism aimed at him was harsh.

"The controversy about my captaincy? People had to find a scapegoat as we didn't win any trophies last season," Gallas told L'Equipe.

"So, they talked and talked again about the Birmingham match. Indeed I made a mistake. I must admit I flipped my lid. We should have won that game easily.

"The critics went much too far. Maybe I put myself under too much pressure, like Arsene Wenger said.

"If I would have been an unworthy captain, they would have banned me."
