Stephen Worgu said he opted to join Merreikh for professional reasons rather than financial.

Former Enyimba striker, who is topping the ongoing African Champions League scoring charts with 13 goals, has joined the Sudanese side days ago for $ 2.6 million.

The 19-year-old was targeted by the five-time African champions Ahli and other powerhouses in the region, but he shockingly preferred the Sudanese league runners-up.

"For many they think it's all about the money, but for me, it is about something more satisfying and fulfilling," Worgu told BBC Sport.

"You just don't pack your bags and go to Europe because many people say so - there is a right time and moment for you to take such a big decision and you are mentally prepared."

More Suitors

In addition to his interest from Ahli, Worgu was believed to be on the shortlist of clubs from Germany, France and Denmark, but a move to Europe did not lure the new Merreikh man.

"I was linked with every club you could think of but it all happened in the papers," he said.

"But the moment Merreikh came into the picture they showed passion and determination."

Although his move to the Sudanese outfit was a bit controversial, the up-and-coming player assured he's delighted with the deal.

"Merreikh has unbelievable facilities and also possess a strong professional attitude in all ramifications," he said.

"The club understand that I am young and have guaranteed me an easy route to a bigger challenge elsewhere if the time comes."
