Middlesbrough coach Gareth Southgate hailed the impact of Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' as his side salvaged a 1-1 draw with West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Egypt striker came off the bench and blasted in a powerful free kick with eight minutes remaining to cancel out Hayden Mullins' first-half opener for West Ham.

"That's the great thing that we've got players on the bench to turn the game," Southgate was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"(Mido) made things happen today. He's a different type of player to Afonso and that was important today."

The 25-year-old took his tally to four goals in the Premier League, three of which he scored as a substitute.

Southgate is yet to settle on his ideal striking partnership. In the absence of Turkish forward Tuncay, Mido and Afonso Alves failed to combine well with each other.

It is highly likely that Southgate will rely on Tuncay as his main striker, with either Mido or Afonso supporting him.
