A 1-1 draw with Basel at the Nou Camp on Tuesday was enough for Barcelona to reach the UEFA Champions League last 16 round.

Scoring sensation Lionel Messi netted the opener on the hour mark for Barcelona and Eren Derdiyok equalized for the Swiss side eight minutes before the final whistle.

Having won the game, the Spanish giants are top of Group C with 10 points, one ahead of Sporting Lisbon, who also found their way to the next round.

In Barcelona, The first half was an uneventful affair, as both sides put on average performances.

Thierry Henry had the only clear-cut chance when he tried to reach Basel's goal from the left flank, but the Frenchman couldn't slot home.

After the interval, Messi broke the deadlock less than two minutes of coming on with a tame shot after latching on Henry's assist.

Both sides played offensively after Messi’s opener, until Derdiyok scored the leveller, which wasn't nearly enough for his side to qualify.

In Lisbon, Derlei earned Sporting Lisbon qualification to the next round after netting a precious winner to lead the Portuguese side to a narrow 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine.

The match remained goalless until the Brazilian striker broke the deadlock on 73 minutes.

Without any hope of reaching the competition’s next round, both Shakhtar and Basel are third and fourth of the group with three and one point respectively.
