French defender William Gallas has been stripped of his Arsenal captaincy, according to English reports.

Sky Sports said that Gallas was disciplined as a result of his recent outburst, in which he revealed dressing room unrest.

The 31-year-old criticized his teammates, saying they 'were not brave enough'. He also accused a player, whom he refused to name, of disrupting morale.

BBC Sport confirmed the news and stated that Gallas did not travel with the rest of Arsenal squad ahead of Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.

Gallas' captaincy credentials have been questioned more than once and he did little to shrug off such notion.

The former Chelsea defender, who was handed the armband at the start of last season, was heavily criticized for failing to accomplish his duties as Arsenal skipper.

Reports suggest that keeper Manuel Almunia will take over the Gunners' captaincy.
