Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said that claiming the FIFA Club World Cup title would be the perfect way to welcome the new year.

The veteran center-half reiterated the European champions are aiming to clinch back-to-back Champions League and Premiership titles this season.

In addition to that, he emphasized on the importance of their objective to be crowned the World champions.

"It doesn't get much better than winning the league and Champions League double," the 30-year-old told FIFA.com

"Now we're looking at being the champions of the world. It would be great to start the season with another trophy under our belts.

"We're desperate to win it and that's what I hope we're going to do."

Although he sounded enthusiastic about the global competition, Ferdinand said he knows just a little about the other contenders.

"I don't know much about the other teams in the tournament, but the manager's working already on that. By the time we head out there, we'll be well prepared," he added.

Alex Ferguson's men booked their place in the elite competition, which will start in Japan on December 11th, after winning the UEFA Champions League title last season.

The Reds have the possibility of facing African Champions Ahli, if they overcome their semi-final opponents and Ahli skips past Pachuca of Mexico and Copa Libertadores holders LDU Quito.
