The 30-year-old has been included in CAF's five-man shortlist for the 2008 award after helping Egypt win the African Cup of Nations as well as leading Ahli to a record sixth Champions League triumph.
Several Egyptian pundits suggested that the winner might have been already chosen before even the African national teams' coaches submit their votes.
"I'm honored to be nominated for such an award, but I think that it should be more transparent," Abou-Treika told Ahli's official website in a lengthy interview.
"People must be free to choose whoever they want and the choices should discard any factors other than footballing matters.
"I don't know why choosing the best player in Asia, Europe or Africa is always marred by problems."
Abou-Treika's compatriot Amr Zaki, who plays for Wigan Athletic, has been also named in CAF's shortlist.
The other nominees are Chelsea duo Didier Drogba and Michael Essien and Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor.
