Rooney had a great tournament, where he scored three goals in two games for United, winning the competition's golden ball in the process.

"It's a great feeling to be a world champion," Rooney told reporters after the game.

"Hopefully we can win the UEFA Champions League this season and be here next year."

The English international was his team's hero in the final, as his 73rd minute strike handed the Red Devils a 1-0 win over Liga de Quito.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men had to complete the game with ten men after defender Nemanja Vidic was sent off early in the second half.

"We tried very hard to win with ten men and I'm so happy we did it.

"It was a long and tough trip, especially with the busy schedule we have. But winning the title made it all worthwhile.
