Substitute striker Mido couldn’t help Middlesbrough beat Sunderland at the Riverside, as the Teeside derby ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Egyptian international was only given few minutes of football, after he replaced Brazilian hit man Afonso Alves on 85 minutes, but he couldn’t leave a mark on the game as Sunderland pilled the pressure near the end.

Alves gave the home side the lead in the 45th minute, before a disappointing second half performance by Gareth Southgate’s men gave Kenwyne Jones the chance to level for Sunderland.

Alves capped a wonderfully crafted Boro move, by latching onto Stewart Downing’s assist with a great finish from out of the Sunderland box.

However, Sunderland took control of the game after the interval, and after wasting a number of half chances, David Healy lead a counter attack by squaring to Jones and the latter finished from close range on 81 minutes.

Southgate tried to salvage a win by bringing on Mido, but the former Spurs man had neither the time nor his teammates’ support to pose any threat.

It was Sunderland who could have scored late, as Adam Johnson cleared Andy Reid’s header off the line.

While Sunderland move to 13th place in the table with 23 points, Middlesbrough are 16th on 21.
