"It was arguably the miss of the season. It was harder to miss it than score," Bruce was quoted as saying by BBC Sport after the match.
"But we played very well and threw everything at them.
"For effort and endeavour we deserved something. We were unfortunate - we came roaring back after looking a bid jaded in the first half."
Zaki, who joined Wigan from Zamalek on a season-long loan in the summer, scored 10 league goals so far.
