Agent Barry Silkman revealed that the Premier League club wanted to land Kuranyi on a loan deal this winter, after the latter fell down the pecking order at the Bundesliga side.
"It was very busy [deadline day], but the deal I was working on didn't get done," Silkman told Sky Sports News. "I think I spent three days working for nothing.
The agent said Everton made a permanent offer to begin with, and then preferred to sign the German international on a loan basis, before the deal collapsed.
"It started off as a permanent deal then it moved in to a loan deal and then eventually the club in Germany, who was Schalke, would not let the player come on loan,” Silkman elaborated.
"Obviously the deal didn't happen so we have got to wait until the summer and see if we can do something then."
Everton manager David Moyes is in desperate need of new strikers after frontline duo Yakubu Aiyegbeni and James Vaughan had sustained long-standing injuries.
"He [Moyes] told me he watched Kevin play four years ago and absolutely loved him, but he has got a clause in his contract which is €25million which is a lot of money," the agent explained.
"So I was working really hard on getting him on loan because the player is not happy at Schalke and I know David really, really likes him.
"Obviously the deal didn't happen so we have got to wait until the summer and see if we can do something then."
