Bayern Munich chairman Franz Beckenbauer blasted Italy hitman Luca Toni for his selfishness.

"Toni only sees himself, the ball and the goal," he told Premiere television.

"That is selfishness which is typical of an Italian striker."

Der Kaiser's criticism is probably triggered by Toni's unhappy reaction to being substituted in Bayern's recent 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

However, Bayern coach and former Germany marksman Jurgen Klinsmann defended Toni, who netted 45 goals in 62 for the Bundesliga champions so far.

"A striker always looks for goal when you have a 50-50 chance. It is only normal for a striker to be a touch selfish," said Klinsmann.

"It is fine for him to be angry. He is sure of his place in the team and we don't want any discussions about Luca."
