Ahli playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika seemed upbeat despite losing out on the 2008 Glo-CAF player of the year award to Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togolese international was announced as the prestigious award’s winner on Tuesday, during the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria.

“I’m not sad about losing the award to Adebayor. He is a very good player and he deserves it. For me, it was an honour to be nominated for such prize,” Abou-Treika told Ahli TV.

“I just hope that Ahli and Egypt fans won’t be disappointed that I wasn’t voted the continent’s best player.”

The 30-year-old made the final three-man shortlist for the award alongside Adebayor and Ghana midfielder Michael Essien.

Inter-CAF Award

Abou-Treika didn’t walk out on the ceremony empty handed, as he won the 2008 Inter-CAF award, which is given to players plying their trade within the continent.

“Adebayor is a great player and he deserves the Glo-CAF award. I’m personally satisfied with winning the Inter-CAF one,” added Abou-Treika.

The Egypt star added that he considered team awards to be a lot more important and significant than any individual success.

During the same CAF ceremony, both Ahli and the Egyptian national side were voted as Africa’s best club and national team respectively.

“It is really a great achievement. Those two awards come as a result of systematic and organized team work.”
