Real Madrid boss Juande Ramos acclaimed veteran striker Raul Gonzalez, who set a new scoring record in Sunday's 4-0 victory over Sporting Gijon in the Primera Liga.

The Spanish ace bagged a brace in the emphatic win to take his tally to 309 goals and break Alfredo di Stefano's record.

"Raul's career is praiseworthy. It will be a long time before anyone surpasses him," Ramos told the post-match press conference.

"Raul is always on the first line of combat, he always shoulders the load and he is always in front of goal. He's a great footballer."

The 54-year-old tactician was also satisfied with his men's performance in the game, saying he has an abundance of competent players at his disposal.

"Huntelaar scored his first goal which should take some pressure off. We hope he scores many more," he added.

"Marcelo also played well. I think he's got a great future in attack. Lass and Gago performed great. This squad is very competitive.

"We played a magnificent match and showed that any player on this squad can be a starter."

On whether or not defending champions Real still have a chance to retain the title, Ramos said: "I am happy for the players. I see that the team is eager and now we're a little closer to the turnaround.

"We cut off two points from Barcelona's lead. We must stay on track and wait for things to happen. It's our eighth straight and we continue growing as a team.

"We rebuilt the team from the defense on up and we feel more comfortable and secure every match we play. We have done quite well in recent road matches."
