Werder Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs rued Claudio Pizarro's unfortunate status, saying the unsettled striker had to be shunned ahead of Saturday's 2-1 loss at Energie Cottbus.

The Peruvian international, who's playing for Bremen on loan from Chelsea, wasn't named in his team's squad for the Bundesliga game for disciplinary reasons.

Earlier on Friday, Pizarro arrived late for the pre-match training session after paying his brother a visit in Munich, and was subsequently snubbed by coach Thomas Schaaf.

"It was a huge disappointment for me that it happened from a player like Pizarro," Allofs told German paper Bild.

Allofs believes the 30-year-old failed more than once to set a good example for his teammates.

"We signed him to act as a leading player who should serve as a role model to the others but then he was suspended for violent conduct against Karlsruhe and now this happens," the ex-Germany international added.

"To have let him play would have sent out the wrong signal.

"We cannot accept such behavior. We voluntarily dropped one of our weapons but we have got to live with that."
