Leverkusen's in-form striker Patrick Helmes restored parity when he converted a 66th-minute penalty after Bochum's Mergim Mavraj handled the ball in the penalty area.

Mavraj was sent off after picking a second yellow card right after the referee pointed to the spot.

Leverkusen, who extended their winless streak to three matches, slipped to fifth place in the league table with 37 point, five behind joint second Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburg SV.
