Middlesbrough midfielder Mohamed Shawky denied that he held any talks with Zamalek officials about the possibility of joining the White Knights.

The Egypt midfielder has become disillusioned with life at Teesside after failing to earn himself a regular spot since joining Gareth Southgate's side in 2007.

"It's true that I'm not happy with things at Middlesbrough, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I'll leave the club," Shawky told reporters from Egypt's training in Alexandria.

"I also want to stress that no one from Zamalek talked to me about signing for the club."

The 27-year-old confirmed that if he ever plays in the Egypt again, it will only be for Ahli.

"I received a verbal contact from an Ahli official inquiring if I was interested in returning to Egypt.

"However, I will not make any decision on my future until the end of the current season."

Shawky's Middlesbrough are currently trailing at the wrong end of the Premiership table, as they lie 19th with 27 points.
