Yossi Benayoun opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he nodded Dirk Kuyt's cross into an empty net.

Kuyt added the second six minutes later with a magnificent diving header from Steven Gerrard's corner.

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton was sent off in the 77th minute after a reckless tackle on Xabi Alonso, who was stretchered off as a result.

Alonso's replacement Lucas headed in the third goal four minutes from time, following Fabio Aurelio's freekick.

Liverpool remain second with 77 points, four behind leaders Manchester United. Newcastle are on the verge of relegation as they lie third from bottom with 31.
