"The main reason for Van Basten resigning was he concluded that he didn’t meet his goals and he doesn’t have the feeling he is capable of improving next season," an Ajax statement read.

Van Basten took charge of Ajax last summer, but couldn’t achieve more than a third place in the Eredivisie this term.

The former AC Milan and Holland star also had an unfruitful spell with the Dutch national team before moving to the Amsterdam Arena.
