Zamalek claimed a 2-0 victory over Police Union in the Egyptian Premier League on Wednesday to avoid ending the season in their lowest ever position.

Two second-half penalties from Alaa Kamal and Hani Saied gave the White Knights all three points.

They finished sixth in the 16-team table on 42 points, just like they did in the 2004/2005 season.

Swiss coach Michel Decastel played a major role in Zamalek's progress, having been appointed while the team were facing an unthinkable prospect of being relegated to the second division.

Zamalek have never finished lower than sixth place since the league's inauguration in 1948.

Earlier in the season, the Cairo giants set their worst record of defeats in one season after losing their tenth league game against Ismaili.
