Gennaro Gattuso, who has just returned to action after undergoing knee surgery, was included in Italy's 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup.

The AC Milan midfielder was among 10 additions to the 13 names announced by Italy coach Marcello Lippi last month.

Uncapped full-back Davide Santon has earned an Azzurri call-up after putting in a series of impressive displays for Inter Milan. There was also room for Liverpool left-back Andrea Dossena.

Sampdoria's in-form striker Giampaolo Pazzini was surprisingly left out of the squad, as was Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta.

Italy will face Egypt, Brazil and the United States in the quadrennial tournament that will take place in South Africa later this month.

Italy squad:
