Manchester United's new striker Michael Owen believes he will rise to the challenge of wearing the number 7 shirt.

Owen joined the Red Devils on a free transfer after his club Newcastle were relegated to the second division.

He will wear the same kit that was worn by United greats George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"That shirt has pressures of its own and some great players have worn it in the past, but I will do it justice," Owen told The Sun.

"The manager asked me to wear the shirt. He said a player needs broad shoulders for it and he asked me if I felt I could handle it.

"I said 'yes' without hesitation. I know it represents so much. Two big players have left Manchester United in Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

"There were a lot of goals in Ronaldo and I'm here to hopefully fill that gap."

Owen scored on his debut to give United a 3-2 victory over a Malaysia XI on Saturday.

He is likely to be Alex Ferguson's preferred choice upfront alongside Wayne Rooney when the new season kicks off.
