"The new conditions will be drawn up and will be signed in the next few days," Barcelona said in a statement.

"The coach Pep Guardiola and the footballer himself made the news known to the rest of his team-mates just before the start of training this morning.

"The Barca squad, united in a circle, welcomed it with a resounding ovation and congratulated the captain for the agreement in principle."

The 31-year-old's current deal is due to expire next summer.

Puyol, a one-club man, was promoted to Barcelona's senior team in 1999 and went on to establish himself as a key player for the Catalans.

He won with Barcelona three Primera Liga titles, two European Cups and a King's Cup.
