Stuttgart relieved Markus Babbel of his duties as head coach on Sunday, days before the Bundesliga side's clash with Unirea Urziceni in the UEFA Champions League, according to media reports.

German paper Bild reported that the young tactician was fired shortly after Stuttgart's 1-1 draw with Bochum on Saturday, which left the former club third from the bottom of the German league on 12 points.

The stalemate with Bochum at Mercedes-Benz Arena prompted a large number of Stuttgart supporters to angrily call for Babbel's departure and confront police forces in the process.

Several troopers were injured during the post-match riot while a handful of fans were arrested.

Under the guidance of Babbel, Stuttgart failed to register a single win in their last eight games. He was appointed at the club in 2008.

Managers Marcel Koller, Dieter Hecking and Lucien Favre were also sacked this season by Bochum, Hanover 96 and Hertha Berlin respectively.

Stuttgart will face Romanian outfit Unirea on Wednesday, and they will advance to the Champions League knock-out stage should they win.
