A South African man was killed by his family for insisting to watch Germany's World Cup game against Australia, local police said on Thursday.
David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from Limpopo province, was beaten to death by his wife and two children for trying to seize the remote control and watch the game, which Germany won 4-0.
His family wanted to watch a religious program instead.
"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,”’ police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said.
"That is when the argument came about. In that argument, they started assaulting him."
This was not the first World Cup-related unfortunate incident that occurred during the football's most prestigious event.
Somali Islamic extremists killed two people and arrested dozens of others for breaking a ban on watching the World Cup on television earlier this week.
