Red card, new record and goal

Both teams looked cagey at the beginning, but the Chileans, who know they still have Spain to face, were more likely to make something happen.

The game took a major twist on the half-hour when Valon Behrami was given a straight red card for an alleged elbow on Chile's Arturo Vidal.

Chile expectedly controlled possession after the sending off, but struggled to pose a real threat on Diego Benaglio's goal before the break.

The ten-man Swiss remained defiant for long against the Chilean dominance, led by livewire winger Alexis Sanchez.

The 67th minute passed and Italy's record of 550 minutes without conceding between 1986 and 1990 was beaten by Switzerland.

But it was only eight minutes later when Esteban Paredes skipped past Benaglio to cross for the unmarked Gonzalez, who headed in the empty net.

Switzerland almost grabbed a dramatic equalizer in the dying moments of the game, but substitute Eren Derdiyok blasted an easy chance wide of the post.
