Saifi reportedly slapped Asma Halimi, who works for Algerian newspaper Compétition, after the Desert Foxes lost 1-0 to the United States to exit the World Cup from the group stage.

She then insulted him and he responded by a throwing a plastic water bottle which missed the target.

"We have only today received the formal complaint and the official report," FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola said on Friday.

"FIFA will look into the matter."

According to media reports, Saifi probably beat Halimi because he was enraged by an opinion article she wrote about him.

Algeria, who were the Arab's only representatives at the World Cup, finished at the bottom of Group C with just one point and no goals to their name.
