Spain skipper Iker Casillas believes that his team are completely overwhelmed by their World Cup triumph and will only realize its significance over time.

La Furia Roja were crowned world champions for the first time in history after beating Holland 1-0 in the final on Sunday, thanks to an Andres Iniesta strike in extra-time.

Real Madrid goalie Casillas, who cried tears of joy after Spain's celebrated victory, played a major role in leading his country to the prestigious title.

"It's a historic moment for Spanish football," he said. "This achievement is something that we, the players, are still not aware of...what the significance really is.

"I think it's something we will only realize over time."

Casillas, 29, produced a host of magnificent saves in the final to keep a clean sheet and help Spain win the golden trophy.

Throughout the quadrennial tournament, he maintained a spectacular form to eventually win the Golden Glove.

"I'm not a saint, not at all. I have a lot of experience after putting in a lot," he stated.

"I have been gifted and have had lots of support from all my family and friends, so I am really overjoyed.

"It's what we have dreamt of since we were children. It is truly a special time and certainly a much happier moment than when we won the European championships. We are now the world champions.

"It was not easy, but luckily we managed to win. We've earned this victory from beginning to end.

"It's been almost 50 days of full concentration. That in itself is very complicated, very difficult and gives an idea of what this group has done."
