"For the whole of Brazil, I say that I officially accept the invitation. I’m very proud and happy," Menezes told a news conference.

The 48-year-old will succeed Dunga, who was sacked after Brazil were eliminated from the World Cup quarter finals at the hands of eventual runners-up Holland.

Brazil approached Menezes after having an offer for Muricy Ramalho turned down by his club Fluminense on Friday.

He will be burdened with the task of leading Brazil to a sixth World Cup triumph in 2014 on home soil.

Menezes led former South American champions Gremio out of the second division in 2005 and helped them reach the Copa Libertadores final two years later.

He then took charge of Corinthians and steered them to first division promotion in 2008.
