Ittihad's board of directors – including chairman Essam Shaaban – resigned on Monday in the wake of intensive protest against them.

"We agreed to quit three days ago but Essam Shaaban planned to announce the decision on Monday," Sherif Ibrahim, one of the resigned board members, told FilGoal.com.

Shaaban was appointed as president on a temporary basis following the departure of his predecessor Mohamed Moselhi in February.

The interim board of directors was supposed to remain in charge till Ittiahd's upcoming presidential elections in September.

Persistent financial difficulties left Ittihad unable to pay the salaries of their players, which caused many first team figures to boycott training.

The Alexandria team are now languishing at the bottom of the Egyptian Premier League table with 11 points.

Ittihad have only won a couple of matches, lost in nine and played out five draws so far in the domestic competition.
