The match was tied at 1-1 after Khaled Melliti canceled out Edward Sadomba’s opener for the visitors, which meant that Africain will wave goodbye to the competition with a 2-1 aggregate loss.
In a scene similar to what happened at Cairo Stadium in the infamous Zamalek-Africain match last month, the Tunisian side’s fans invaded the pitch and started all kinds of trouble inside the stadium.
Malian referee Koman Coulibaly, who was pushed by an Africain player right before the violence started, was then attacked by the angry supporters, forcing him to flee into the dressing room.
There were also scenes of chairs burning in the stands and smashed gates as security forces had to interfere in order to contain the situation.
Africain are likely to be considered losers following the events as a further sanction from the African football ruling body seems inevitable.
Zamalek were fined $80,000 and ordered to play their next two continental home games behind closed doors by CAF, who revealed that the report of Algerian referee Mohamed Bichari somehow helped the Egyptian side.
Following the public revolution in Tunisia in January, the domestic league has been postponed for three months before being resumed in mid-April behind closed doors.
