The Tottenham midfielder sustained a knee injury following a challenge with teammate Happy Jelle on Thursday morning.

“Steven went into a 50/50 challenge while trying to shoot and sustained an injury on the inside of his right knee, the ligament it looks like,” said manager Pitso Mosimane.

“It's up to the (team) doctor to have a look at him now and assess him and, if necessary, he will have to have a scan done and that will tell us the extent of the injury.”

Mosimane, however, insisted that he will bring his influential midfielder to Cairo as the captain’s armband is likely to be handed to Siphiwe Tshabalala.

“He (Pienaar) is travelling with the team, we will take everybody,” added Mosimane, who led Bafana Bafana to a 1-0 victory over the African champions back in March.

“I'm always worried when I lose any player...but you just have to deal with it and if he's injured he'll be replaced.”

Pienaar has already been struggling with a groin injury before joining his national team’s pre-match camp.
