Holders Egypt are on the brink of failing to reach the African Cup of Nations and a defeat in Cairo against Bafana Bafana will seal their feat.

South Africa lead Group G with seven points, six ahead of Egypt, who are rooted.

"At a certain stage of the World Cup qualifiers, we were considered out of the race," Hassan told reporters in Ismailia, where the team prepare for the game.

"But we made a huge comeback and finished joint top, forcing a decider.

"Yes, we lost this decider. But the lesson learnt was that you can never give up, never mind how slim your chances are."

Back in 2009, Algeria were leading Egypt with just three points and the gap could be closed as both teams clashed.

Sierra Leon who come third and second-placed Niger, who have six points, are now also standing in the Pharaohs way towards qualification.
