Ahli striker Emad Meteb says he has been asked to testify in favor of one of the Port-Said massacre defendants claiming to be wrongly sentenced to death.

Meteb told his club's official website that an accused defendant in the Port-Said case came to ask for his testimony after appearing to be one of the Ahli fans who pleaded for the Egypt international's help during the bloody incident.

The Ahli star indicated that he agreed at once to prove the innocence of the charged man, who is one of the 21 defendants sentenced to death by court.

"During the Port-Said incident, some Ahli fans rushed into our dressing room pleading for help and that man (the defendant) was there," the 30-year-old Meteb said.

"I was surprised to find him waiting for me after a training session to remind me of him until I remembered that he was one of the fleeing fans during the Port-Said fans' attack.

"He told me that he was unfairly charged in the case and that he was later sentenced to death.

"I agreed at once to deliver my testimony to prove his innocence and spare his life."

A criminal court had handed 21 defendants involved in the tragic death of more than 70 Ahli fans in Port-Said last year the death penalty a month ago, as another session takes place on March the 9th.

The court’s verdict sparked violence in the governorate of Port-Said, although Ahli fans were relieved that ‘justice was served’.
