"Now that my knees seem to be working again, I’d like to carry on for another season," Calcio Italia magazine quoted Maldini as saying to ‘La Stampa’ newspaper on Saturday.
Maldini has been victimized with a string of serious injuries over last season in which he featured in just 14 league games.
The former Italy international defender hinted previously that he will probably announce his retirement at the end of the season but is now reconsidering his stance.
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has welcomed Maldini's change of heart.
"We have a very clear promise with Paolo. If he wants to continue his playing career, then all he has to do is come to the club headquarters and sign the contract," Galliani said.
The Rossoneri skipper will celebrate his 600th Serie A appearance against his side's arch-rivals Inter Milan which will coincide with his 52nd derby.
