Georgia captain Kakha Kaladze has apologized to his teammates after hilariously scoring twice past his own net to hand Italy a 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory.

Kaladze, who ironically plies his trade in Italy with AC Milan, headed in Angelo Palombo's shot before sending Domenico Criscito's cross into his own keeper's net.

"My team did well and we showed our heart. I’m so sorry, it’s my fault. It hurts me. I don’t know what to say," the 31-year-old told reporters after the game in Tbilisi.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro sympathized with his Georgia counterpart as the Azzurri maintained their position on top of Group 8.

"It’s a shame for Kaladze, as to see a game decided by two own goals is never nice for a player," said the Juventus center-half.

"We are pushing forward and the important thing is that we rediscover our spirit on the field."
