Roma captain Francesco Totti is angry at the critics who think that he didn't deserve the lucrative contract extension he was awarded of late.

The former Italy great signed a five-year deal at the capital side in July, which means that he will spend the rest of his career in the Eternal City.

The new contract will see the 32-year-old earn £4million per season; a wage that some people think is too much for the veteran marksman.

But Totti believes his extension was well-earned, saying that making money has never been his objective.

"I think I earned the contract that has been drawn up for me, because I always fought for what I have," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"I want to point out that this is a valuable contract, but I never thought about money, otherwise I would have left aged 26 when Real Madrid and Barcelona wanted me.

"I would've earned double what I am picking up now.

"I always wanted to make my career with the Giallorossi jersey and nobody will ever again refuse the money I did from Madrid and Barcelona.

"It was a choice made with the heart and for that alone I want some respect. It's a shame to hear these comments circulating about my renewal."

Totti played his first professional game for Roma in 1992.
