Ahmed Elmohamady played no more than 33 minutes as a ten-man Sunderland side held on to grab a 1-1 draw at Wigan.

Egypt full-back Elmohamady made his fourth straight Premier League start, but had to make way for Christian Riveros, 12 minutes after Lee Cattermole was sent off.

Elmohamady went down to a challenge by Maynor Figueroa, seconds before his exit.

After the break, Sunderland took the lead against the run of play, courtesy of a debut goal by new signing Asamoah Gyan.

But Wigan got their equalizer three minutes from time when Antolin Alcaraz headed home past Simon Mignolet.

Sunderland remain 10th with five points from four games, while Wigan are 17th on four.
