Syria claimed their first victory in 35 years over Saudi Arabia, beating the three-time Asian champions 2-1 on Sunday.

Abdul-Razak Al-Hussein gave Syria a first-half lead as Taisir Al-Jasem equalized for the Saudis on the hour mark .But Al-Hussein restored his side’s lead to complete his personal double three minutes later.

Outsiders Syria lead Group B with three points as Saudi Arabia lie bottom. Japan and Jordan played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the same group.

Syria face Japan on Thursday as Saudi Arabia meet Jordan in an all-Arab clash.
